How It Happened
Lebanon Valley suffered a 5-1 setback at the hands of No. 2 Messiah on Tuesday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth men's soccer action at Herbert Field. The Dutchmen fell to 6-4-1, 2-1 MACC, while the Falcons remained unbeaten and improved to 11-0-2, 4-0 MACC.
Throughout the first 10 minutes of action, LVC dictated the action and saw a few decent scoring opportunities, however Connor Bell made a few big saves in the early going to keep the game scoreless. Later, just past the 16th minute, Messiah's David Alejos received a pass into the middle from Lucas Kokolios and Alejos found the back of the net to give the Falcons a 1-0 advantage. Then, in the 23rd minute,
Sean Quirk saved Jonathan Groothoff's shot, but the rebound went right to the feet of Kokolios, and he scored to make it a 2-0 match heading into halftime.
In the 65th minute, Nick West netted a goal off a free kick from just outside of the box for his 20th of the season that gave the Falcons a 3-1 advantage. After Messiah made it 4-0 in the 73rd minute, the Dutchmen were fouled just outside the box, resulting in a free kick.
Caleb Cekella took the kick and rocketed it past Bell for his second marker of the season. LVC's lone goal wasn't enough, however, as the Falcons added a tally late and went to win 5-1.
