How It Happened
Dane Varner scored in the 82nd minute to give Lebanon Valley a key 2-1 victory over Stevenson on Homecoming Saturday at Herbert Field. The Dutchmen improved to 7-4-1, 3-1 MACC, while the Mustangs dropped to 8-6, 2-3 MACC.
With just over eight minutes left in the second half, the Dutchmen generated a corner kick which went into the box. Stevenson kicked the ball out for a few seconds, but
Kurtis Rineer took a shot back into the back that was blocked. After a short scrum, the ball came out to Varner and he ripped a ball into the left corner of the net past a diving goalie for his first-career goal and the eventually game-winner.
Late in the first, in the 38th minute, Diego Guerrero put a shot on net that was saved by
Sean Quirk, but Pete Wickiser got the rebound and scored over a diving Quirk to put the Mustangs up 1-0. Each team was held off the scoreboard for the remainder of the half and Stevenson went into halftime clinging to a 1-0 advantage.
In the 49th minute, LVC evened the score when the Mustangs were called for a foul inside the box. Rineer took advantage of the situation and connected on the PK for his fourth goal of the season. Each squad's defense took over from there and limited the scoring chances until Varner sank Stevenson late to win it for the Dutchmen.
