How It Happened
GLENSIDE, Pa. – Needing a win to at least have a chance at a MAC Commonwealth Tournament berth, Lebanon Valley's women's soccer team delivered with a 1-0 upset-victory over Arcadia on Saturday afternoon in each team's regular-season finale. Thanks Widener beating Stevenson 1-0 earlier tonight, the Dutchmen (7-6-2, 3-4-1) snuck into the fifth and final playoff spot, while the Knights (11-4-3, 6-1-1 MACC) will be the No. 2 seed in next week's postseason tournament.
In the 15th minute of action,
Emma Longenecker's corner kick set up a flurry of chances for LVC. 26 seconds after Longenecker's corner,
Maya Cohen ripped a shot but it was saved by Brianna Williams. Then, five seconds later,
Bridgett Finn scored off a rebound to give the Dutchmen the 1-0 lead. Later in the half,
Rileigh Jo Evitts had a scoring opportunity, but Williams made the stop. Then,
Katie Goldsmith and
Lucy McGloshen saw decent chances, but Williams made two more saves. Heading into halftime, LVC was still clinging to its 1-0 lead.
In the early going of the second half, the Knights were threatening, but
Serena Donmoyer made some huge saves in the 55th and 60th minute of action. Donmoyer went on to make several more big saves in the final 30 minutes of action, and LVC's defense did well in limiting one of the conference's best teams, resulting in the big win. The Dutchmen's game ended around 5:15 p.m., so they had to wait around until the Widener vs. Stevenson match at 7:30 p.m. to decide their fate. It worked out in LVC's favor, as the Pride's first-half score held up, similar to the Dutchmen's match, and LVC is now headed to the MAC Commonwealth Tournament.
Inside the Numbers
- Finn and Evitts ended with two shots apiece.
- Arcadia's Veronica Garcia led all players with five shots.
- Donmoyer was stellar between the pipes, making eight saves to earn the shutout victory.
- The Knights led in shots (16-7) and shots on goal (8-5).
- Arcadia held the slight edge in corner kicks at 3-1.
