Volleyball Splits at Scranton's Tri-Match

SCRANTON, Pa. – In Lebanon Valley women's volleyball's opening match at the University of Scranton's Tri-Match, the Dutchmen cruised to a 3-0 victory over Gallaudet University on Friday afternoon.

In the first set, LVC held a slight 9-8 advantage before scoring five straight, capped by Reily Shelly's kill, to take a six-point lead at 14-8. After the Bison came to within four at 15-11, six consecutive points from LVC put the set out of reach, and the Dutchmen went on to take the opening set 25-16.

The second set was close in the early going as it was tied 8-8. From there, Mikiah Sangrey, Amanda Sides, and Jensen Burnheimer each registered a kill to put LVC ahead 11-8. Later, with the Dutchmen up 16-11, LVC went on an 8-0 run, which included four kills from Jess Attieh, to guide the Dutchmen to a 25-14 second-set victory.

The third set was the closest out of the three, as neither team was able to go on any runs to extend the lead until very late. With LVC up 20-18, the Dutchmen were finally able to put together a spurt and they scored the set's final five points, capped by another Attieh kill, to win the frame 25-18 to sweep Gallaudet 3-0.

 - Attieh led the offense with 14 kills (.440) to go along with three digs.
 - Sides chipped in eight kills and six digs.
 - Shelly ended with six kills and tied for the team lead with 10 digs.
 - Kaitlyn Reed had 10 digs, while Burnheimer had 33 assists.

Lebanon Valley battled the hosts, but eventually fell 3-2 in a five-setter. After splitting today, the Dutchmen moved their overall record to 14-10.

After the two teams split the first two sets, the third set was a battle that took some extra points to decide a winner. In the third, the Dutchmen jumped out to a 6-1 advantage and held on to that lead until it was at 17-12, the Royals went on a 7-2 run to tie things up at 19-19. Tied at 23-23, Shelly converted a kill to give the Dutchmen set point, but a Kristin Kirwan kill saved Scranton for the time being. Then, with the Royals ahead 28-27, Jayna Class staved off a set point, followed by a Sides ace. Attieh then registered another kill to give the Dutchmen a thrilling 30-28 third-set win to put LVC up 2-1 in the match.

The Dutchmen were slightly edged 25-21 in the fourth as Scranton forced a fifth and deciding set. The Royals began the fifth on an 8-4 spurt and later extended their advantage to 10-5, but the Dutchmen responded with a 5-1 run to come to within a point at 11-10. The set remained close from there, and LVC got to within a point at 14-13 after Burnheimer's kill, but on the ensuing point, the Royals were able to get a kill and narrowly edge LVC 15-13.
 
Inside the Numbers vs. Scranton
 - Attieh dominated and finished with a career-best 25 kills and a .460 hitting percentage. She added 12 digs for the double-double.
 - Sides and Shelly chipped in eight kills apiece, while Shelly had 12 digs.
 - Burnheimer ended with 51 assists, two service aces, and 12 digs.
 - Reed added 10 digs for the Dutchmen, while Emily Smeltz notched a team-high 15 digs.
 
Who's Next?
LVC returns to action on Tuesday when the Dutchmen travel to Williamsport for a MAC Commonwealth match against Lycoming at 7 p.m.
