ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's swim program hosted its final home meet of the 2017-18 season at the Arnold Sports Center on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 20. The Flying Dutchmen welcomed Hood to campus, with the women coming away with a 170-69 victory and the men swimming to a 109-109 draw.
In addition to Saturday's competition, head coach
Mary Gardner and the rest of the program also honored its LVC Class of 2018 as
Danielle Burns,
Jordan Heavel,
Leslie Hiller,
Jacob Ilgenfritz,
Erin Kingham,
Chris Kurtz,
Kyra Lancaster,
Ian Lloyd,
Andrew Martz,
Emily Walak, and
Jessica Zeiner were recognized during the meet's Senior Day ceremonies.
Kaitlyn Welch and
D'Anna Sydow were the big winners, as both qualified for the upcoming MAC Championships thanks to their efforts on the day. Welch's time of 3:09.21 in the 200m fly was good enough to earn her a spot in next month's event, while Sydow's 1:16.99 clinched her a spot at the conference championships in the 100m back.
For the men, Kurtz posted a MAC-qualifying effort of 1:18.74 in the 100m breast and picked up the victory in the event over the runners-up from Hood in a tight race that saw the top three swimmers all finish within a second of each other.
Lloyd was his usual strong self and picked up two individual victories in the 200m back and the 100m fly. He came within less than a second of breaking his own program record in the latter event thanks to touching in 1:00.01 and his 2:20.21 in the back was good enough to earn him the win by almost seven seconds.
Gabe Dimisa added another individual victory for the men in the 50m free with a time of 27.72.
Laura Ciuchta was victorious in the 800m free and had another solid showing in the 400m free, while
Alexis Morace,
Emily Thrush, and Julianna Currie went 1-2-3 in the 50m free. It was more of the same Dutchmen dominance in the 100m free as
Nicole Flohr posted the top time of 1:07.93. In the 100m fly, Morace, Sydow, and Hiller made it a clean sweep for LVC by all touching within four seconds of each other.
The Dutchmen bookended the event with relay victories, starting with the foursome of Welch,
Courtney Betsock, Morace, and Currie winning the 200m medley with a 2:18.00, and the group of Walak, Gingrich, Betsock, and Currie wrapping things up by posting a 2:06.85 in the 200m free.
The men capped the day's festivities by winning a thrilling final 200m free relay when Lloyd,
Charlie Besjak, Dimisa, and Kurtz combined to swim a 1:48.69, good enough to edge out the runners-up from Hood by less than a second.
LVC is back in action when the teams travel to Messiah next Saturday afternoon, Jan. 27.
