How It Happened
MAHWAH, N.J. – At the first day of the Ramapo Quad, Lebanon Valley's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 setback at the hands of Union College. The Dutchmen dropped to 10-5, while the Dutchwomen improved to 8-10.
In the opening set, the teams traded off points until it was 12-12. Union, out of Schenectady, N.Y. and members of the Liberty League, went on a mini 3-0 run to go up 15-12. LVC eventually tied it back up at 18-18 thanks to a kill by
Amber Deshong.
Nina Mentzer followed that with a kill, and an attack error then gave the Dutchmen a 20-18 advantage in the set. After the Dutchwomen got to within one at 20-19, LVC scored the next two points, another Mentzer kill and a Union attack error, to go back up by three at 22-19. The Dutchmen were able to maintain their narrow lead, and a service error by the Dutchwomen clinched the opening set for LVC at 25-22.
In the second set, the Dutchmen jumped out to a 10-6 lead, and later extended it 14-8. Union, however, began to creep back into the set and later came to within one of LVC at 18-17. The Dutchmen responded with a 6-0 run, capped off by
Jayna Class' kill, to go ahead 24-17. LVC, however, was unable to close out the set and Union scored the set's final nine points to take the set 26-24 and even the match at 1-1.
It was another back-and-forth game that followed and the Dutchmen held an 11-9 edge before scoring three straight to increase the lead to 14-9. But, the Dutchwomen again went on a run, scoring four consecutive points to come to within a point at 14-13. After LVC scored two in a row, Union tied things up at 16-16. Later, with the set knotted at 23-23, Deshong recorded a kill to make it 24-23 Dutchmen, but three consecutive points for Union clinched the third set for the Dutchwomen at 26-24.
