LVC Earns A Pair of Wins at Dutchmen Quad

LVC def. Neumann 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24)

LVC def. Frostburg State 3-0 (25-10, 26-24, 26-24)

How It Happened – Neumann Match
ANNVILLE, Pa. - In LVC's opening match of the day and second of the 2017 Dutchmen Quad, the Dutchmen defeated the Knights of Neumann University 3-1.

In the opening set, LVC jumped out to an 8-3 lead, however Neumann responded with four consecutive points of their own to come to within one at 8-7. The set stayed close until at 12-10, the Dutchmen rattled off four straight points to extend their advantage to 16-10. The Knights later came to within three of LVC at 22-19, but the Dutchmen scored the set's final three points, including two kills by Jayna Class, to take the opening set 25-19.

The second set was also close, as the Dutchmen opened up a 5-3 lead, but it vanished when the Knights seven in a row to take a 9-5 lead. Later, when it was 13-7 in favor of Neumann, LVC began its comeback by scoring four consecutive points, capped off by a Nina Mentzer kill, to come to within two at 13-11. Later, at 15-13 Knights, another 4-0 run gave the Dutchmen a 16-15 advantage. It was then 22-18 LVC, but the Knights didn't go away and scored four of the next five to come to within one at 23-22, forcing LVC to burn a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Neumann served up an error and Adrianna Lattanzi followed with a kill, clinching the set for the Dutchmen at 25-22.

After LVC fell in a close third set, they had to work hard for the fourth-set victory. It was a very back-and-forth game early on as the teams traded off points and Neumann was out in front 10-9. The Dutchmen answered with five consecutive points, however, taking a 14-10 lead into the Knights' timeout. Later, at 23-15 LVC, Neumann came roaring back and put together a 8-0 spurt to tie the fourth set at 23-23. Then, at 24-24, Autumn Leese registered a kill, and Jess Attieh blocked the next Neumann attack to clinch the set at 26-24 and give the Dutchmen a 3-1 win.

Inside the Numbers – Neumann Match
 - Amanda Sides led in kills with 13, while Attieh added 12 and Class chipped in 10.
 - Attieh recorded four blocks and Jensen Burnheimer and Mentzer added two apiece.
 - Burnheimer racked up 43 assists, while Emily Smeltz had 17 digs and Abbey Barnhart added nine.

How It Happened – Frostburg St. Match
In LVC's final match of the day, a sweep of Frostburt St., the Dutchmen came out strong in the opening set, taking it 25-10. LVC had 14 kills in the first set and a .500 hitting percentage. 10 of those kills came at the hand of Attieh.

The second set was much tighter, as it was tied almost midway through at 11-11. From there, neither squad was able to break away from the other, and the game was eventually tied at 18-18. Two consecutive kills by Mentzer and Class put LVC ahead 20-18, however the Bobcats responded with four points in a row to take a 22-20 lead. After the Dutchmen called a timeout, the back-and-forth set continued and FSU eventually led 24-22. LVC utilized another timeout, and finished the set with four straight kills from Burnheimer, Mentzer, and two from Attieh, to narrowly win the set 26-24.

Early on in the third set, the Bobcats were dictating action and led 11-7 and eventually 17-8. It looked as though the match was headed towards a fourth set, but when it was 20-11 FSU, the Dutchmen decided three sets were enough. Impressively, LVC scored eight straight points to come to within one at 20-19. Just like the previous set, the teams traded off points and when the score came to 24-24, Attieh ripped a kill and Burnheimer finished off FSU with a service ace to win the set 26-24.

Inside the Numbers – Frostburg St. Match
 - Attieh dominated on offense, going for a Dutchmen Quad-high 21 kills. Mentzer and Class each added six kills.
 - Burnheimer served up four aces and added 42 assists.
 - Mentzer led with five blocks, while Attieh registered four.
 - Barnhart and Smeltz each paced the defense with 11 digs.

Who's Next?
LVC now sits at 9-4 on the season after three-straight wins. On Tuesday, the Dutchmen head to Reading to battle Albright in MAC Commonwealth action. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start.
