How It Happened
Lebanon Valley cruised to a 3-0 sweep of Misericordia in the opening match of the 2017 Dutchmen Quad at Sorrentino Gymnasium on Friday night, Sept. 22. The Flying Dutchmen (7-4) rolled past the Cougars (9-6) by set scores of 25-11, 25-12, and 25-16.
LVC jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set thanks to a service ace by
Jayna Class and never looked back. The Dutchmen scored six points in a row during an
Erin Koons' service run to go up 11-2 and kill by
Amanda Sides off a Jensen Burheimer assist made it 16-5 midway through the set. LVC led by as much as 19-7 after an
Autumn Leese kill and the Dutchmen took six of the final seven points to take the game.
Misericordia led early in the second set at 5-3 but LVC answered with a 7-0 run during Leese's service period. Leading 13-8, the Dutchmen put the set out of reach by recording seven of the next eight points, capped by a Class service ace. Lebanon Valley sealed the set with back-to-back kills by Sides and
Jess Attieh.
The third set was back-and-forth in the early going before an 8-1 run by the home team pushed the Dutchmen advantage to 11-5. An
Emily Smeltz service ace capped the game-changing run. MU drew to within 14-10 but LVC scored four of the ensuing five points to push the advantage to 18-11 late in the set. Attieh added a solo block moments later to make it 21-14 and
Reina Eckman's kill off a Burnheimer feed a few points volleys later clinched the set and the match for Lebanon Valley.
Inside the Numbers
- The Dutchmen hit .317 for the match, while Misercordia finished in the red at -.063. LVC racked up 34 kills and committed just eight errors.
- LVC had 12 service aces, while the Cougars managed five. The Dutchmen also held a 7-3 edge in blocks.

Jess Attieh had a strong showing, finishing with 11 kills and a .588 hitting percentage to go along with four total blocks.

Amanda Sides finished with six kills and three blocks, while
Jayna Class made her mark with five kills and a match-high seven aces.
- Setter
Jensen Burnheimer racked up 27 assists and added four digs and three kills, while
Autumn Leese had a nice showing with six kills and five digs.
- Libero
Emily Smeltz once again provided the athleticism by getting to a number of tough balls in the back row. She finished with a match-high 10 digs.
Who's Next?
LVC finishes up the Dutchmen Quad tomorrow afternoon. Lebanon Valley opens against Neumann at 11 a.m. before closing out against Frostburg State at 2 p.m. FSU defeated the Knights in five sets on Friday night.
