How It Happened
No. 18 William Smith proved why it's a nationally-ranked team in a 4-1 victory over Lebanon Valley on the final day of the annual William Smith Classic in Geneva, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon.

The Flying Dutchmen (3-4) were able to hold off the Herrons offense for 25-plus minutes but a penalty corner opened the door for the home team and Elizabeth Carlson found the back of the cage off assists by Samantha Petruzzo and Fallon Adair with 19:45 left in the first half.

Nearly 10 minutes later, William Smith struck again when Hannah Wood doubled the advantage by making a move around LVC goalkeeper Tori ByDeLey and finishing from point-blank range.

Just moments after halftime, the home team added another marker when Katie Battaglia put back a ball that deflected off the right post with 31:15 left to play. Maura Moran was credited with the assist.

Moran got into the scoring action herself a few minutes later when a penalty corner again presented William Smith a scoring chance it wouldn't squander. Wood found Moran and she did the rest to make it 4-0 with 15 minutes remaining.

The Dutchmen finally broke up the shutout when Maddie Fox converted an attempt off an assist by Rachel Kagarise following one of the team's five penalty corner opportunities, cutting the defict to 4-1 with 7:16 left to play.
