How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – In a game that featured five lead changes, Lebanon Valley was edged out by No. 18 Alvernia 7-6 on Sunday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action. The loss dropped the Dutchmen to 10-9, 4-4 MAC Commonwealth, while the Crusaders improved to 17-2-1, 8-1 MAC Commonwealth.

On a 3-2 pitch in the bottom of the first, Chase Weik gave LVC an early lead when he drew a bases-loaded walk that scored Chris DeClerico. Alvernia, however, took the lead in the top of the third when Ben Dubas singled through the right side to score two. In the bottom of the frame, Marshall Kiessling tied it up with one swing of the bat when he homered down the right field line to make it a 2-2 contest.

In the sixth, the Dutchmen went ahead 4-2 when DeClerico singled home Josh Herring and Michael Puglisi, but again, the Crusaders had an answer as Cameron Coons hit a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh to knot the game again, this time at 4-4.

The back-and-forth affair continued when Zac Edwards doubled down the left field line to plate Herring and put LVC back up by one at 5-4. In the top of the ninth, Coons was at it again for Alvernia when he sent an 0-2 pitch over the right field wall for a three-run homerun to put the Crusaders up 7-5. Puglisi made it a 7-6 score with a double down the left field line in the bottom of the ninth and the Dutchmen got the tying run to third, but were unable to score him, resulting in the narrow 7-6 defeat.
