How It Happened
READING, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's baseball team suffered two close losses to No. 18 Alvernia on Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen dropped a 1-0 contest to the Crusaders before falling 5-0 in the nightcap. LVC now sits at 10-8, 4-4 MAC Commonwealth, while Alvernia is now 16-2-1, 7-1 MAC Commonwealth.
The first game of the afternoon was the definition of a pitcher's duel with
Casey Wall and John Catchmark dueling it out on the mound, pitch for pitch. The Dutchmen actually had a decent chance to score in the top of the first after
Michael Puglisi walked and
Chris DeClerico singled to shortstop, but LVC was unable to cash in.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth when Francis began the inning with a single, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Boyle. After Sides grounded out to advance Francis to third, Cirilli laid down a good bunt that allowed Francis to score for the contest's lone run.
Inside the Numbers (Game One)
- Wall was impressive but was just slightly outdueled by Catchmark. Wall tossed six innings and scattered eight hits while striking out three.
- Catchmark went the distance and struck out 10 while giving up three hits.
-
Zac Edwards, DeClerico, and Marshall Kiessling each recorded a hit for the Dutchmen.
- For the Crusaders, Briner went 2-for-3.
