How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley outscored Alvernia 16-6 in the third quarter and eventually cruised to its third-straight win by a score of 55-30 on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's basketball action. The Dutchmen improved to 5-2, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth, while the Golden Wolves dropped to 2-3, 0-2 MAC Commonwealth.
With LVC ahead by just five heading at 20-15 into the third quarter, a massive 16-0 run that spanned nearly eight minutes put the game out of reach at 36-19. During the critical spurt,
Caroline Scarff started things off with a layup, followed by another layup on the fastbreak by
Becky Evans. After an Alvernia timeout,
Emily Mealey got in on the action and connected on back-to-back layups, while
Anne Lehr then made another fastbreak-layup for the Dutchmen. The Golden Wolves scored their only six points of the quarter near the end, but LVC still went into the fourth with a comfortable 36-21 advantage.
The Dutchmen remained on fire in the early stages of the fourth, as
Morgan Bamberger, Evans, and Mealey hit consecutive 3-pointers to ice the game and put LVC up by 24 at 45-21 with 8:22 left in the game. The Dutchmen led by as many as 30 at one point, and they went on to cruise to a 55-30 win.
In the early stages of the contest, Alvernia held a slight 6-2 advantage with 5:55 left in the first, but that was quickly nixed when Scarff made a layup at 5:41, followed by a good free throw from Scarff at 4:57. With 4:21 left in the first, Bamberger drilled a trey to give LVC an 8-6 lead with 4:21 remaining. Lehr later hit a jumper in the paint, and the Dutchmen held a narrow 10-9 lead after one quarter of action.
In the second, LVC's defense continued to stifle the Golden Wolves, as Alvernia mustered up just six points in the 10-minute period.
