ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – As has become a pre-Thanksgiving tradition, Lebanon Valley's men's and women's swim teams competed against local foe Elizabethtown in their last meet before Turkey Day. The Flying Dutchmen were in action at E-Town on Monday night, Nov. 20, with the women's squad edged by the Blue Jays 117-88 and the men falling 153-47.
Ian Lloyd was his usual steady self as he came away with a pair of victories and a runner-up finish. The senior was victorious in the 200y IM thanks to a time of 2:03.4 and he picked up his second win of the night in thrilling fashion by swimming a 1:06.39 in the 100y breast; a time just .18 seconds faster than the runner-up from Elizabethtown. He also earned a second-place finish in the 100y back thanks to a time of 57.57.
Courtney Betsock,
Erika Schell, and
Kaitlyn Welch were the big winners on the women's side, as the freshmen were a part of at least two victories each on Monday night.
The trio opened the meet by teaming with
Katie Gingrich to swim a top time of 2:02.98 in a tightly-contested 200y medley relay. That time was .17 seconds faster than the runner-up foursome from E-Town. Betsock was victorious in the 100y breast, with her time of 1:14.83 little more than a second off the program record set in 2008. She also earned a runner-up finish in the 50y free by touching in 27.21. Schell won the 100y fly by nearly six seconds thanks to a time of 1:05.92 and Welch's 1:09.00 in the 100y back was good enough to give her the win.
The women's group of
Julianna Currie,
Leslie Hiller, Schell, and Gingrich closed out the event by combining for the victory in the 200y free relay with an effort of 1:50.42.
Distance swimmer
Sarah Wolfe came away with a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1,000y and 500y free events, respectively. The freshman swam a 12:15.76 in the longer of the two events before posting a 5:59.04 in the latter.
Chris Kurtz nearly picked up the victory in the 100y fly, as his time of 57.80 was just .51 seconds off the top time of E-Town's Tommy Kuhn.
Jacob Ilgenfritz also had a solid showing in the event and earned a third-place finish.
The Dutchmen return to the pool in two weeks when they host fellow Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) program Stevenson on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 2.
