How It Happened
Lebanon Valley cruised to a 69-47 victory over Ursinus at Sorrentino Gymnasium in the team's home opener on day one of the 2017 Rinso Marquette Women's Basketball Tournament on Saturday evening, Nov. 18.
The Flying Dutchmen (2-0) raced out to an 11-0 lead right out of the gate thanks to back-to-back buckets from
Emily Mealey, a
Becky Evans' 3-ball, a
Veronica Venezia layup, and an
Anne Lehr score in the first three minutes.
The Bears (1-1) used a 7-1 run over the next 6:11 to cut the deficit to five before Lehr found Venezia for a layup that put LVC out in front 14-7 after one quarter of play.
The Dutchmen took control of the game when they outscored the visitors 17-6 in the second quarter. Mealey netted six points during the stanza, Evans had five tallies, and Venezia chipped in with four free throws to give LVC a comfortable 31-13 lead at halftime.
Morgan Bamberger got into the scoring act by knocking down a couple of 3-pointers in the third quarter and
Caroline Scarff's foul shots at the 3:55 mark pushed the Lebanon Valley advantage to a game-high 25 points.
Ursinus cut the deficit to 50-36 with 9:21 left to play in the fourth quarter but LVC put together a pivotal 12-3 run that culminated midway through the period when Scarff converted a layup to make it 62-39 with just 4:55 remaining.
