How It Happened
ANNVILLE, Pa. – Lebanon Valley got back on track and defeated Penn State Harrisburg 3-1 on Tuesday night in non-conference volleyball action. The Dutchmen improved to 11-7, while the Lions dropped to 7-7.
Harrisburg jumped out to an early 8-4 advantage in the opening set, but LVC responded with a 3-0 run, capped off by an
Amanda Sides kill, to come to within a point at 8-7. The Lions outscored the Dutchmen for a while from there and made it 15-11, but LVC responded with a 5-1 spurt and tied things up at 16-16. The teams traded off points until at 22-22, a service error, an
Emily Smeltz ace, and a Harrisburg attack error gave LVC three straight points, clinching the first set 25-22.
After dropping the second set, the third set was close early on at 8-8. After
Jayna Class' kill and two consecutive service aces by
Adrianna Lattanzi, the Lions came out of the timeout and rattled off six straight to take a 14-11 advantage. The Dutchmen again answered, getting kills from Class and
Nina Mentzer to go along with blocks from Mentzer and
Jensen Burnheimer to again tie the set at 14-14. After Harrisburg took an 18-15 lead, LVC scored five in-a-row to go up by two at 20-18. Later, with the score 24-22 in favor of the Dutchmen, LVC called a timeout and
Jess Attieh ended the set with a kill to put the Dutchmen up 25-22.
The fourth and final set was close as teams kept the score tight, resulting in an 11-11 score almost midway through. From there, Harrisburg opened up a small lead and lead 18-15. The Lions increased their advantage later to 22-17, but the Dutchmen had no plans of falling in the set and sending the match to a fifth set. Â They scored five points in a row, including a pair of kills by Attieh, one from Mentzer, and one from
Amanda Sides, to take a 23-22 lead. Then, with the score tied at 24-24, Sides recorded a kill and a Lions' attack error sailed just long, giving LVC a 26-24 fourth-set win a 3-1 victory.
