How It Happened
Lebanon Valley turned in an impressive defensive effort but ultimately couldn't break through on the offensive side in a 4-1 loss to Lynchburg at Shippensburg University's Robb Sports Complex on Tuesday night, Oct. 3.
The Flying Dutchmen (3-8) clamped down in the opening half and goalkeeper
Tori ByDeLey turned away all six shots she faced in the first 35 minutes. LVC had two chances to strike first but attempts by
Cecile Kat and
Casey Dombroski off a penalty corner were stopped by Lynchburg keeper Laurel Nicks in the third minute.
The Hornets (8-3) finally broke through early in the second half when Nikki Simpao fired a shot from point-blank range off the stick of a Dutchmen defender and into the cage to put Lynchburg on the board in the 36th minute.
After three corners nearly resulted in points for LVC, the Hornets took advantage of a loose ball at midfield and converted it into a goal when Lacey Elliott outraced a number of defenders before Jackie Lerro finished off her cross from in close in the 50th minute to double the team's lead.
Lynchburg's third score was nearly indefensible, as Simpao lifted an open attempt over ByDeLey and the rest of the Dutchmen defense and into the back of the cage off a penalty-corner insertion from Karissa LeMaire with 15:38 remaining.
Rachel Gorman made a beautiful deflection and defensive save on the exact same shot minutes earlier but couldn't turn LeMaire away twice.
The Hornets netted their final score when Isabella Eldridge corralled her rebound following a save by goalkeeper
Nikki Willi and put back the extra attempt with 4:01 left to play.
Kat ended a scoring drought that stretched back more than three games and nearly 220 minutes when she gathered in a feed from Gorman, turned to create separation from a defender, and piped her blast past Nicks with 3:15 remaining.
