How It Happened
ARLINGTON, Va. – Lebanon Valley dropped two matches at Marymount's (Va.) Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon. The Dutchmen finished the regular season at 16-13, but will partake in the 2017 MAC Commonwealth Championship next week.
Southern Virginia Match
LVC was swept by Southern Virginia in the opening match. The Knights jumped out to a 7-3 advantage in the opening set, but the Dutchmen battled back to make it 9-6 in favor of SVU. The Knights then countered with five consecutive points to go up 14-6 and never looked back, taking the first set 25-11.
In the second, LVC began the set on a 6-3 run, capped by
Autumn Leese's service ace. The Dutchmen continued to lead by a few points, but at 17-14, four straight points from the Knights put them ahead 18-17 and forced LVC to call a timeout. The Dutchmen came out of the time out and scored three straight, including a
Jayna Class kill,
Adrianna Lattanzi service ace, and a
Jess Attieh kill, but a 5-0 run by SVU put the Knights up 23-20. LVC responded with a string of three consecutive points, and later a kill by
Amber Deshong tied things up at 25-25. From there, SVU's Alfred notched a kill and followed it up with a service ace to clinch the set for the Knights at 27-25.
Early on in the third, the set was locked at 6-6, however SVU went on a 9-0 run to go ahead 15-6. After two consecutive points from the Dutchmen made it 15-8, seven consecutive points by the Knights made it 22-8 and put the set out of reach, as SVU went on to take the third set 25-10.
Inside the Numbers – SVU Match
 - Attieh had six kills and two blocks, while Lattanzi added five kills.

Jensen Burnheimer finished with 16 assists.

Emily Smeltz led LVC with 14 digs and Burnheimer added 10 more.
Marymount Match
In the nightcap, the Dutchmen and the Saints played a five-set thriller that went the way of Marymount in the end. The first set was a thriller, as it was close throughout, beginning at 7-7. After the Saints went on a 7-3 run to go ahead 14-11, LVC rattled off three straight to even the set at 14-14. Marymount responded with a mini 5-1 run to go ahead by four at 19-15, but the Dutchmen battled back again and scored three in-a-row, capped by
Abbey Barnhart's service ace, to come to within one at 19-18. Later, Marymount had set point at 25-24, but Attieh ripped a kill to keep LVC alive. The teams traded off points from there, but at 28-28, the Saints scored twice and took a long first set at 30-28.
The Dutchmen got even in the second and dominated Marymount throughout most of the set. With LVC ahead 20-13, five consecutive points, including two service aces by Barnhart, clinched the set at 25-13 to even the match at 1-1. After the Saints took the third, the Dutchmen evened the match at 2-2 in the fourth and sent it to a fifth and deciding set.
In the fifth, Marymount opened it on a 5-1 run and LVC followed it with a timeout. The Dutchmen came out of the timeout and scored four of the next five to come to within a point at 6-5, but the Saints increased their lead with two points of their own and went up 8-5. Later, Attieh's kill brought LVC to within one at 10-9, but the Saints ended the set on a 5-0 run and took the set 15-9 to win the match 3-2.
Inside the Numbers – Marymount Match
 - Attieh finished with a match-high 22 kills, while Lattanzi and
Nina Mentzer added seven kills apiece.
 - Barnhart served up a matchbest five aces and she added a LVC-high 26 digs.
 - Burnheimer ended with 45 assists and 15 digs.
 - Lattanzi dug out 17 balls for the Dutchmen.
MAC Commonwealth Tournament Bound
In the 2017 MAC Commonwealth Championship Tournament, LVC will be the No. 3 seed and travel to Arcadia on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The Play-In game features No. 5 Alvernia at No. 4 Messiah on Monday, with the winner heading to Owings Mills, Md. on Wednesday to battle No. 1 Stevenson.
