How It Happened
Lebanon Valley made quick work of Alvernia in MAC Commonwealth action thanks to three-set victory at Sorrentino Gymnasium on Tuesday night, Oct. 10. The Flying Dutchmen earned set-score wins of 25-17, 25-21, and 25-19.
The first set was tight through the middle portion, with the Golden Wolves (13-8, 3-3 MAC Commonwealth) leading 10-8 before LVC (13-9, 4-1 MAC Commonwealth) scored nine of the next 10 points to create some breathing room down the stretch. Alvernia burned a timeout while trailing 22-14 but
Amber Deshong and
Nina Mentzer kept things rolling with assisted blocks out of the break before a service error by the visitors gave Lebanon Valley the opening-set victory.
AU led for much of the opening portion of the second game, with the team's largest lead coming at 9-5. Just like the first set, however, LVC roared back during the middle section and eventually grabbed the lead thanks to an
Abbey Barnhart service ace. Things were close the rest of the way, with the Golden Wolves cutting the deficit to 23-20 in crunch time, but Deshong answered and sealed the win with a kill off a
Jensen Burnheimer assist.
Set three appeared to be going Alvernia's way, as the visitors held a 16-14 edge late in the game. Head coach Wayne Perry called for time and the Dutchmen came out hot after the break, scoring the next five consecutive points to pull ahead 19-16. The Golden Wolves drew to within one but LVC held off the charge, using a service ace from
Erin Koons and a pair of Mentzer kills to clinch the set and the match.
