How It Happened
SHELTON, Conn. –
Jillian Moffatt was brilliant for Lebanon Valley in net, however the Dutchmen fell to Sacred Heart by a 4-2 score on Saturday afternoon in women's ice hockey action. The Dutchmen fell to 2-16 and the Pioneers jumped to 18-8-1.
Moffatt recorded 92 saves on the evening, which is the second-most ever in a women's hockey NCAA DIII game. The record is 101 by Sirena Enright from Chatham back on Oct. 22, 2005.
Sacred Heart scored two first-period goals before the Dutchmen struck back when
MacKenzie Bokina netted a power-play goal from
Liz D'Ginto and
Nikki Lloyd, as LVC went into the locker room down by just one at 2-1. 19 seconds into the middle period, Amie Varano scored her second for the Pioneers to make it 3-1, but D'Ginto netted her sixth of the season to tie Lloyd for the team lead. Then, with the Dutchmen within striking distance, Jayne Lewis found the back of the net for Sacred Heart to make it a two-goal game again at 7:46 of the second. The Pioneers' defense and starting goalie Sarah Erban didn't allow another goal for the remainder of the contest, resulting in the narrow 4-2 loss for LVC.
This time around against Sacred Heart, the Dutchmen certainly showed signs of improvement. Back on Nov. 4 and 5, the Pioneers defeated LVC 5-0 and 11-1, respectively.
