How It Happened
A missed free throw with 0.2 seconds left to play proved the difference in Lebanon Valley's 60-59 loss to MAC Commonwealth rival Alvernia at Sorrentino Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 21.
After the front end of a pair of free throws by the Crusaders' Mike Miller put the visitors ahead 60-58 with 3.3 seconds remaining,
Sam Light gathered the rebound off Miller's second-shot miss and was fouled with less than a second left. Light calmly sank his first attempt from the charity stripe but his second fell short and
Andy Orr's put back attempt was off the mark as time expired.
With the game tied at 56-56 with 1:01 remaining, George Williams converted three free throws over the course of the team's next two possessions to give Alvernia (11-7, 5-4 MAC Commonwealth) a three-point lead with just seven seconds left.
Light was fouled crossing midcourt with three seconds remaining and converted a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to one with just 3.3 left. The Flying Dutchmen (11-7, 5-4 MAC Commonwealth) were forced to foul Miller, who converted the first of his two free throw attempts.
The two teams traded the lead throughout the contest with LVC grabbing its largest advantage of the day at five at the 13:22 mark of the second half when
Marquis Davis converted a layup to put the Dutchmen up 42-37.
The Crusaders led by as many nine points with 4:42 remaining in the first half.
