How It Happened
Lebanon Valley earned it second consecutive shutout victory thanks to a pair of goals from
Rachel Youngs and an impressive defensive effort in the team's 3-0 win over Misericordia at Arnold Field on Wednesday night, Sept. 28.
Youngs scored twice in a span of 2:09 midway through the first half, giving the Flying Dutchmen (8-2) a lead it wouldn't surrender. Her first score was a blast from the right side of the circle off a
Maddie Fox find following a penalty corner in the 21st minute. Fox again hooked up with Youngs off a penalty-corner insertion from
Rachel Gorman, this time with 11:05 remaining in the half.
The second half proved a defensive struggle for much of its duration, as neither team was able to add a marker until Fox was dragged down inside the circle while making a move towards the MU net. LVC was awarded a penalty stroke that Gorman converted with 7:16 left to play.
Dominant Defense
The Dutchmen defense was strong on Wednesday night, allowing the Cougars (1-9) to get off just one shot on goal, of which goalkeeper
Sarah DiMaggio dispatched. The group of
Alida Steenkamer,
Tasia Dennis,
Rachel Gorman, and
Casey Dombroski led the way for a unit that turned in one of its best performances of the season against MU.
Stat of the Night
18-2 – The advantage held by LVC in penalty corners. The Dutchmen were aggressive inside the circle and were awarded an impressive number of corners, including 14 in the first half, compared to just a pair for Misericordia. Both of Lebanon Valley's non-penalty stroke scores came as a result of penalty corners.
