How It Happened
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Lebanon Valley's volleyball team dropped its first two matches of the 2016 on Friday night at the annual Cortland Red Dragon Classic, hosted by Cortland University. In the Dutchmen's first match against Stockton, the Ospreys downed LVC 3-1. In the nightcap, Alfred barely edged out the Dutchmen 3-2 in a thriller.
Against Stockton
In the opening match against the Ospreys,
Nina Mentzer led the way offensively with nine kills, while
Amber Deshong and
Greta Weidemoyer finished with seven kills apiece. Freshman
Nicole Werner had a nice collegiate debut with three aces and 10 digs, while
Jess Attieh had a team-high four blocks and Mentzer added three.
Erin Koons led the way for the Dutchmen with 25 assists and 13 digs, with
Morgan Webb adding nine more digs.
For Stockton, Idi Uffen had a match-high 15 kills and Lindsay Schuele added 13 more. Jessica Ciandella notched 22 assists and Rebecka Zabilowicz tallied 25 digs.
Against the Saxons
The second match of the night against Alfred was an exciting one. The two squads traded set wins in the first two before Alfred won the third set 25-19. The Dutchmen won a thrilling fourth set by a score of 30-28 to force a fifth and deciding set where the Saxons barely edged LVC 15-13.
Weidemoyer led the offense with 16 kills, while Attieh added 13 and Deshong chipped in seven. Freshman
Allie Riggins served up two aces, while Weidemoyer had three blocks and
Reina Eckman and Mentzer had two each. Koons added 25 assists again, while Webb dug out 14 balls and
Amanda Sides recorded 12.
Who's Next?
The Red Dragon Classic concludes tomorrow with LVC battling the Coast Guard at 11 a.m. before taking on Wells College at 4 p.m.
