How It Happened
Lebanon Valley erased a pair of second-half deficits and
Maddie Fox converted the game-winning goal in a heart-stopping, come-from-behind, 4-3 double-overtime victory over No. 9 William Smith on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 18.
Fox's game-winner came in the 90th minute when
Casey Dombroski found her moments after the ball was put in play on a penalty corner. Her fourth score of the season set off a wild celebration as the LVC bench cleared onto the Herons' home field.
The Flying Dutchmen (6-1) trailed 3-2 in the closing moments of the second half when
Rachel Gorman netted the equalizer with 1:40 left to play. Her second goal in as many games came one day after she posted the game winner against St. Lawrence on the first day of the annual William Smith Classic.
Hannah Wood broke the late-game stalemate and put the Herons (5-2) ahead in the 66th minute when she converted a short-handed goal off a Maura Moran assist following a St. Lawrence penalty corner.
Fox erased the home team's two-goal, first-half advantage when she scored her first marker of the day when she redirected a
Megan Arnst pass with 15:52 remaining.
Brittany Fleisher got LVC on the board early in the second half when she gathered a rebounded shot attempt and beat William Smith goalkeeper Biz Chirco in the 40th minute.
The Herons scored a pair of first-half goals; the first coming when Moran deflected an Alessandra Patrizio rebound into the back of the box in the 12th minute, and the second coming off the stick of Jessica Borbee at the 13:20 mark.
Hanging With the Big Boys
William Smith was the second opponent ranked in the NFHCA top 10 that LVC faced this season. Two weeks ago, the Dutchmen fell to No. 10 Montclair State in their only defeat of the season. The last time Lebanon Valley faced a top-10 team prior to the loss to the Red Hawks was last fall, when the Dutchmen dropped a 7-4 decision at No. 8 William Smith.
They Like It Real Close
Lebanon Valley continues to show off its knack for winning close games, as every one of the team's six victories have come by a one-goal margin.
