How It Happened
Lebanon Valley began its 2016 season by holding off Berkeley (N.J.) and defeated the Knights 2-1 on Thursday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action. The Dutchmen moved to 1-0, while Berkeley dropped to 0-1.
The first half was scoreless, however LVC saw more scoring chances.
Riley Katshir was able to break free on several free kicks, however all of his headers went just wide of the cage.
After the 10 minute halftime break, the Dutchmen elevated their level of play and the scoring chances became much more prevalent in the second half. LVC finally broke through just under four minutes into the half when
Rob Hanosek sent a terrific pass to
Matt Prince in the midst of a 2-on-1 and Prince beat the goalie to give the Dutchmen the 1-0 advantage.
About 20 game minutes later,
Tyler Skye got behind the defenders and stayed on sides for the rare breakaway, and the junior took advantage and made a nifty move that beat the goalkeeper left side. Skye's tally gave LVC a 2-0 lead with 22 minutes left in the second.
In the 81st minute, the Knights were awarded a penalty kick due to a foul in the box, and Wender Lima snuck it past
Cam Avery to cut the deficit to one at 2-1. The Dutchmen, however, were able to hold off Berkeley for the final 10 minutes and secure the 2-1 win.
Inside the Numbers
- LVC led the Knights in total shots at 16-8.
- Berkeley held the edge in corner kicks at 9-6.
- The Knights' Robert Parker (five saves) was tested much more than LVC's Avery, who made three saves on the afternoon.
- This is the second time in the last three years that the Dutchmen have won their opening game.
