How It Happened
GLENSIDE, Pa. – Arcadia scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Lebanon Valley by a 4-3 score on Friday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth baseball action. The Dutchmen fell to 14-19, 6-10 MAC Commonwealth, while the Knights improved to 20-11-1, 11-5 MAC Commonwealth.
Down by a 3-1 score in the bottom of the fifth, Arcadia scored on an RBI-single to make it 3-2, and then in the bottom of the ninth, the Knights were able to push two runs across the board and won it on a walk-off single by Bryan Gillen.
It was LVC who struck first as
Colin Albright hit an RBI-groundout in the top of the first to give the Dutchmen an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the second,
Philip Berry grounded out to score
Zach Smith and increase the lead to 2-0. After Arcadia got one back in the bottom of the second to make it 2-1, LVC went back up by two in the top of the third when
Brett Fundell reached on a fielder's choice to score Zach Edwards.
On the Mound
Michael Houseal got the ball and was brilliant in the eight innings that he pitched, but got the no decision. In eight innings of work, he scattered 10 hits and yielded just two runs while striking out three Knights.
Nathan Smith (3-1) took the tough loss after trying to close it out in the ninth, however one of the conference's top offenses broke through late and edged the Dutchmen.
At the Plate
Edwards, Z. Smith, and Marshall Kiessling all had hits for LVC, while Albright and Berry each had an RBI.
Michael Puglisi notched a three-bagger for the Dutchmen.
For Arcadia, Gillen went 4-for-5 and Justin Chasmar was 2-for-5.
Next Time
LVC hosts the Knights tomorrow in a double header, which begins at 12 p.m. At the ballpark, it will be Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Day and Alumni Appreciation Day.
