How It HappenedHARRISBURG, Pa. – A day after Penn St.-Harrisburg knocked off the No. 11 team in the country, Salisbury University, Lebanon Valley downed the Lions by an 8-3 score on Sunday afternoon. The Dutchmen moved to 14-18 overall, while Harrisburg fell to 17-20.
A milestone was reached in LVC's win today, as
Brett Fundell reached the 100-career hit plateau, joining his teammates
Zach Smith and
Zac Edwards who accomplished the feat earlier this year.
In the top of the third, the Dutchmen broke a scoreless tie when Edwards reached on a fielder's choice that scored
Joshua Marcelli, who led off the inning with a single. Starting pitcher
Casey Wall was mowing down the Lions until the bottom of the fifth when Brett Arney was caught attempting to steal second, but Scott Angsta scored on the play to tie things up at 1-1.
The Dutchmen retook the lead in the top of the seventh when Marcelli was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Fundell. Later in the frame, Marshall Kiessling hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to plate
Greg Orlando and push LVC's lead to 3-1. The Dutchmen added to their lead in the following inning when Z. Smith singled home
Colin Albright and
Tyler Mathe, making it a 5-1 contest.
Harrisburg added two in the bottom of the eighth, however LVC put the Lions away in the top of the ninth, beginning with a
Michael Puglisi sacrifice fly to score
Matthew Smarkanic. After
Jonathan Harned scored on a wild pitch, Albright belted his first home run of the season to give the Dutchmen the 8-3 lead, which they held onto in the bottom of the ninth.
Fundell Makes History - Impressively, three Dutchmen went earned their 100th career hit this season, and Fundell is the most recent LVC player to do it. John Mentzer (2005-08) is the program leader in hits with 180.
At the Plate - Fundell was 3-for-5 at the plate today with a run scored, while Orlando was 2-for-4 and now has 27 hits in 53 at-bats this season for a .509 average.
- Albright was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and Smarkanic also notched two hits with a run scored.
On the Mound - Wall (2-4) was phenomenal on the mound this afternoon, going eight innings while scattering 10 hits and striking out seven.
Nathan Smith threw the final inning and went 1-2-3, including a punch out.
Who's Next?LVC enjoys a little break until its next game. The Dutchmen head to Glenside on Friday for MAC Commonwealth date with Arcadia at 3:30 p.m. before hosting the Knights on Saturday.
