How It Happened

Lebanon Valley couldn't overcome a four-goal third quarter by Washington (Md.) on Wednesday night, falling to the Shoremen 9-2 at Arnold Field.

Washington (4-3) held a narrow 4-2 advantage at halftime but finished the game by scoring five in a row, while the team's defense kept the Flying Dutchmen (4-3) off the board the rest of the way. In the third period, the Shoremen used a man-up goal by Peter Jacobs, a strike from leading-scorer Tanner Barbieri, and a pair of markers by Nick Boyles to put it out of reach on a night when LVC had trouble finding the back of the net down the stretch.

Things didn't start out that way, however, as leading-scorer Brett Kudlak got Lebanon Valley on the board first by scoring one of the prettiest goals of the season in the first quarter. Klayton Garman hit Kudlak as he darted in front of net and the attacker finished the play by going behind his back to beat Washington goalkeeper Ben Flood at the 5:54 mark.

The Shoremen answered little more than two minutes later when Matt Allen scored his first goal of the night. He struck again with a marker just moments into the second quarter that gave Washington a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

After another Shormen score made it 3-1 with 7:38 left in the period, Baker Landon connected with a man-down goal off a Koty Keefer assist to cut the deficit in half. Unfortunately, it would be the last offensive conversion LVC would muster on the night.

Turning Point
Things began to turn in favor of the Shoremen just before halftime when Nick Boyles netted his first goal of the night to double the Washington advantage to 4-2 with 26 seconds left until the break. An LVC turnover with just over a minute left in the second quarter allowed the visitors to add a goal before the half and they picked up where they left off in the third, scoring all four of the period's markers.

Top Play
Brett Kudlak's team-leading 12th goal of the season came in impressive fashion as he finished off a look in front by going behind his back to beat Washington goalkeeper Ben Flood off a look from Klayton Garman with 5:54 remaining in the first quarter.
