How It Happened
SUNY Geneseo did just enough in the fourth quarter to escape Sorrentino Gymnasium with a 52-40 victory over Lebanon Valley in the 2016 Rinso Marquette Tournament Championship Game.
The key moment came midway through the third quarter when the Flying Dutchmen (1-2) had cut the deficit to two points at 26-24 following a jumper by
Hilary Yoh at the 5:06 mark. The Knights (2-0) were able to hold off the LVC push and score eight of the game's next 10 points to take a 32-26 advantage into the final period of play.
Geneseo outscored the Dutchmen 20-14 in the fourth quarter to seal the win and earn the tournament's championship trophy. After falling behind by double digits early in the final quarter,
Jennifer Eck's three-pointer drew the home team to within five points at 38-33 with 5:59 remaining.
The Knights used a crucial 10-2 run over the next three and half minutes to put it away.
The contest proved to be a defensive struggle in the first half, particularly in a first quarter that ended with SUNY Geneseo leading 7-6. LVC's seniors in
Lexie Lantz, Yoh, and
Taylor Troutman notched one field goal apiece in the opening 10 minutes, while
Becky Evans and Eck added four points each in the second quarter to keep the deficit to a manageable 24-17 at halftime.
