Five Things
  1. Lebanon Valley will end its 119th football season against longtime rival Albright on Saturday.
  2. LVC has won two in a row and is coming off a convincing 34-20 victory at FDU-Florham last weekend.
  3. Brendon Irving rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown last week, and in the process, became the program's all-time leading rusher with 3,925 career yards.
  4. The Dutchmen and Albright are meeting for the 96th time. It is the oldest and most-played rivalry in LVC football, having first met in 1898.
  5. Tradition holds that an LVC victory over Albright results in students getting the day before Thanksgiving off from school, but only if they march en masse to the president's residence, Kreiderheim, to request it.

Senior Day
Before the game, LVC will honor its football senior class, its senior cheerleaders, Miranda Evitts, Amanda Howard, and Kaitlyn Partington, head student manager J.R. Capatch, and athletic trainers Brett Berta and Hannah Sipe. The Class of 2016 has won 20 games, including the 2013 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championship and made an NCAA tournament appearance that fall.

The Rivalry
This is the 96th meeting in the rivalry ... Albright leads 60-32-3 ... It is the most-played rivalry in LVC history, and the oldest continuous, having been played every year since 1947 (excluding World War II years, it has been going every year since 1924) ... The first meeting was a 10-3 LVC win on Nov. 2, 1898 ... An unknown dispute led to a gap in the series between 1903 and 1912, despite the fact that Albright at that time was located in Myerstown in Lebanon County.

The Tradition
Tradition holds that if Lebanon Valley beats Albright, its oldest rival, then the LVC student body is to march up the hill to the home of President Lewis Thayne, Kreiderheim, and request the day before Thanksgiving (Nov. 23) off from school. That day is scheduled to be a half-day of classes. It's been five years since an orderly mob of Dutchmen, led by the football team and Annville police and fire personnel, marched from Arnold Field up the hill to Kreiderheim, where they were granted the day off by president emeritus Stephen MacDonald following LVC's last win over the Lions.

Last Year
With Lebanon Valley leading 7-3 early in the second quarter, Albright's high-powered offense scored 35 unanswered points en route to capturing the 2015 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) championship with a 38-13 win at Shirk Stadium last fall. With the Flying Dutchmen trailing 3-0, Travis Saylor made two fantastic catches during LVC's second-quarter scoring-drive, one a diving catch on third down to move the chains before snagging a 16-yard pass from Tim Pirrone, breaking a tackle, and diving into the end zone to give the Dutchmen their only lead of the afternoon. The Lions' passing game got rolling on the ensuing possession, using a wide receiver pass play to score a long touchdown, and never looked back. Albright added two more touchdowns before halftime and a pair of third quarter field goals before finding the end zone for the final time early in the fourth to put it out of reach. Senior fullback Charlie Galante corralled a four-yard touchdown pass, the first of his career, from fellow senior in quarterback Jeremy Franck with 39 seconds remaining to end LVC's drought and cap the game's scoring.

Last Week
The Flying Dutchmen set the tone early when they marched 65 yards on the team's opening possession and scored the game's first touchdown in a 34-20 win at FDU-Florham last Saturday. Running back Jon Jones capped the 11-play drive with a seven yard touchdown run at the 9:52 mark of the first quarter. The Devils responded with a pair of long passes on their first possession, including a 25-yard scoring strike from quarterback Jagger Green to tailback Steve Iannone at the 7:11 mark. The ensuing PAT attempt was unsuccessful, however, and LVC held the lead. Lebanon Valley's offense got right back to work on its next possession, using its rushing attack to drive the length of the field before quarterback Tyler Sterner and wideout Michael Gaval hooked up for their third touchdown connection of the season, this time from 18 yards out to make it 14-6 Dutchmen late in the first quarter. LVC's defense made its first big play of the afternoon when strong safety Kyle Murray picked off Green looking for a receiver over the middle on a third-down pass attempt early in the second quarter. Jared Kramp made a key play on special teams when he returned an FDU punt 22 yards late in the second quarter, setting up the Dutchmen at the Devils' 30-yard line. Irving needed just one play to increase the LVC advantage as he scampered 30 yards to paydirt for his second rushing touchdown of the year with 5:02 remaining before halftime. Inside linebacker Alex Trujillo halted FDU-Florham's next drive when he picked off Green deep in Devils' territory with less than four minutes left in the quarter. Lebanon Valley used five plays to move to the one-yard line before Sterner's quarterback keeper capped the scoring drive and gave the visitors a comfortable 27-6 lead heading into the break. The Dutchmen put together another dominating drive on their first possession of the second half, driving 60 yards in 12 plays for another touchdown. This time it was do-it-all athlete Tim Pirrone scoring from six yards out in LVC's wildcat package with 6:21 remaining in the third quarter. Marcus Brown converted his fourth extra point of the day to cap the scoring for the visitors.

Sterner Settling In
Tyler Sterner has made a strong impression in limited action this season, as the junior quarterback took over duties under center just three weeks ago midway through LVC's contest at Lycoming. He followed it up with his first career start against Misericordia in week nine before holding down the job at FDU-Florhman last Saturday. In his four appearances this season, Sterner has completed 51 percent of his passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns. He's also shown poise in the pocket and enough mobility to keep opposing defenses honest, rushing for 31 yards and a score. His presence helped the Dutchmen erase a 21-point deficit at Lycoming before he led the team to its first victory in six weeks when Lebanon Valley handled Misericordia. He added another touchdown pass and a quarterback sneak across the goal line in the team's win at FDU-Florham last week.

New Favorite Target
With Tyler Sterner taking over under center, he's found a new favorite target in wide receiver Michael Gaval. In the last three weeks alone, the senior has made nine catches for 137 yards and three touchdowns. Sterner has hooked up with Gaval on nine of his 23 completed passes this season and all three of his touchdowns through the air have been pulled in by the versatile wideout. Statistically, Gaval's best outings this fall have come with Sterner throwing his way.

No Fly Zone
For the second week in a row, the Dutchmen defense recorded multiple interceptions en route to a convincing victory. After racking up a pair of picks in a win over Misericordia two weeks ago, LVC intercepted FDU-Florham quarterback Jagger Green three times last Saturday. Strong safety Kyle Murray pulled in his first pick of the season in the first quarter before inside linebacker Alex Trujillo made his second interception later in the half. Fellow linebacker Tommy Garner added his second pick of the fall to halt a Devils' drive that had reached the Lebanon Valley red zone early in the fourth quarter. For the season, LVC has now recorded 10 interceptions.

Irving Becomes All-Time Rushing King
Last Saturday was an historic day for Brendon Irving as the senior tailback became Lebanon Valley's all-time career rushing leader during the team's 34-13 victory at FDU-Florham. Irving rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries to pass current LVC assistant coach Ben Guiles on the program's all-time rushing list. His 3,925 career rushing yards are the most by any player in school history.

More History to be Made?
Fresh off his history-making performance, Brendon Irving could still add a couple of program firsts to his resume in this weekend's season finale. Heading into his final contest, Irving needs just 75 yards to become the first player in school history to rush for 4,000 yards. If he is able to get loose for 137 yards on the ground, he will become the only player in program history to rush for 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons. Irving has rushed for 100-plus yards in each of LVC's last three contests.

Noting LVC's Offense
Lebanon Valley's offense has surged to life during its last three outings, as the unit has put more points on the board than its season-long average of 18.4 per game in each of those contests. Quarterback Tyler Sterner's emergence has steadied the Dutchmen offense in recent weeks. The junior has yet to turn the ball over and has thrown three touchdowns and added another rushing score while completing more than 51 percent of his attempts. Tailback Brendon Irving has rushed for 100-plus yards in three straight games and ranks second in the MAC with 863 rushing yards. The senior is averaging more than five yards per carry. Michael Gaval is the team's leading receiver, having pulled in 23 catches for 279 yards and three touchdowns. Travis Saylor has also caught 20 balls for 200-plus yards and a score, while Dylan Berberick has been the team's most consistent tight end. LVC has turned the ball over 18 times this fall but has been much more secure with the rock over the past four weeks.

Noting LVC's Defense
The Dutchmen defense is surrendering 26.3 points per game but has held its last two opponents under that mark. Strong safety Kyle Murray is the team's leading tackler with 64 stops, including 45 solo tackles. He's also added 1.5 TFL, an interception, a forced fumble, and five pass breakups on the season. Tom Gallagher is the top tackler among LVC linebackers with 41 stops. The junior captain has added 2.5 TFL, including one sack, an interception, a forced fumble, two pass breakups, and a pair of quarterback hurries. Fellow linebackers Alex Trujillo and Tommy Garner have each picked off two passes this fall, while freshman Dylan Lobach has added a forced fumble. Defensive lineman Guy Zimmerman is the team's sack leader with 2.5, cornerback Spencer Moser has recorded a team-high six pass breakups, and defensive end Jermaine McQueen has added a pair of quarterback hurries. Lebanon Valley is minus four in turnover margin but has racked up six turnovers in the last two weeks alone.

Noting LVC's Special Teams
In the kicking game, Marcus Brown has converted all three of his attempts that weren't blocked, with a long attempt coming from 28 yards out. His only miss on the season was turned away against Misericordia. Nick Bentz continues to be the team's kickoff specialist and is averaging more than 57 yards per attempt with a pair of touchbacks. Punter Spencer Moser has been solid when called upon and is averaging more than 35 yards per kick. The unit has also shined on opposing PAT attempts, with the Dutchmen blocking three extra-point tries on the season. Anthony Jenkins, Dylan Lobach, and Jacob Whitfield have each blocked a PAT this fall. Return man Jared Kramp turned in his best effort of the season at FDU-Florham last week as his 22-yard return set up an LVC touchdown run one play later.

Scouting Albright
The defending conference champions are coming off a convincing 43-14 victory over Misericordia last week and are averaging an impressive 34.7 points per game, while only giving up 15 points per contest. Quarterback Alec Vignola has been stellar, completing 68 percent of his passes and throwing for 1,570 yards and 19 touchdowns on the season. Wide receiver Vinny Williams has made 57 receptions for 727 yards and 12 touchdowns, while fellow wideout Malik Jackson has made 44 grabs for 593 yards and four scores. Roemello Monroe is the team's leading rusher, scampering for 544 yards and four touchdowns, while averaging 5.7 yards per touch. Linebacker Kevin Mason is the team's leading tackler with 64 stops. He's added 5.5 TFL, a sack, a pair of quarterback hurries, a pass breakup, and a kick block. Fellow linebacker Grant Boehler is the team's sack leader with six, while safety Donte Thomas has returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns. The Lions have forced 11 interceptions and recovered five fumbles but are minus-one in turnover margin on the year.

Streaking Lions
After dropping its first two games of the 2016 season, Albright has been on a tear since week three. The Lions are in the midst of an impressive seven-game win streak that includes road victories over top conference contenders the likes of Delaware Valley and Widener. The team's only losses came at the hands of Salisbury in the season opener and to nationally-ranked Stevenson in week two, respectively.

Season Recap
The Dutchmen will end their 119th campaign in program history at 4-6 overall and 4-5 in MAC play or 3-7 overall and 3-6 in conference play. Saturday's contest wraps up Joe Buehler's '89 first season as LVC head coach.
