How It Happened
Lebanon Valley was edged by Stevenson 3-2 in an exciting five-setter on Wednesday night in Sorrentino Gymnasium. The Dutchmen slipped to 18-6, 5-1 MACC, while the Mustangs jumped to 22-7, 7-0 MACC.
Stevenson jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first set, but LVC answered and came to within two after five straight points. Later at 18-14, the Mustangs scored two in a row, forcing the Dutchmen to burn a timeout. At 21-16, Stevenson scored the set's last four points and took it 25-16.
The Dutchmen came out firing in the second and began the set with a 13-4 advantage. Later in the second, the Mustangs got to within four at 19-15, however three straight Dutchmen points, including a
Greta Weidemoyer service ace, made it 22-15 and LVC went on to take the set 25-17.
The third set was very back-and-forth, as no team held more than a five-point lead throughout the set. Stevenson broke out to a 19-14 lead, only to see the Dutchmen rattle four straight, capped by Erin Koon's service ace, to bring LVC to within one at 19-18. Eventually, the Dutchmen tied it at 22-22 off an
Amanda Sides kill. After Stevenson went up 23-22, LVC scored the last three points to take the set 25-23 and take a 2-1 lead.
After the Mustangs took the fourth set 25-10 to force a fifth set, the decider was tied at 4-4 early on. When Stevenson was ahead 7-6, they scored four of the next five to extend the lead to 11-7. LVC came to within three at 12-9, but Stevenson finished off the Dutchmen by scoring the match's final three points.
