How It HappenedLebanon Valley dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to DeSales at Elizabethtown on day one of the Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic on Saturday afternoon when the Bulldogs' Zach Reichard netted the game-winner with 37 seconds left in the second overtime period.
Patrick Roche gathered a loose ball in the box off his chest and made a quick pass to Reichard who put his shot past LVC goalkeeper
Cam Avery just moments before the second extra session was set to expire.
The Flying Dutchmen (0-2) struck first when
Austin Freeman converted the team's first goal of the season off a cross from
Tyler Skye in the game's 49th minute. Freeman knocked in Skye's pass from close right of goal just moments after halftime to give LVC its first lead of 2015.
DeSales (2-0) drew even when Ian McArdle found twine off a Patrick Roche cross in the 71st minute and regulation would prove too short for the teams to settle things. Each squad got off a shot in the first overtime period but neither could convert.
After nine scoreless minutes in the second extra session, the contest appeared to be heading towards a draw until Roche connected with Reichard in the final seconds.
It Was Over When… Reichard found the back of the net with 37 seconds left in the second overtime period. The two teams battled evenly for over 109 minutes until a winner was finally decided.
Notable PerformanceAustin Freeman – The sophomore midfielder accounted for five of Lebanon Valley's 13 total shots and two of the team's six shots on goal. He netted the Dutchmen's first score of the young season and gave them their first lead of the 2015 campaign.
