How It HappenedLebanon Valley spotted no. 8 William Smith three first half goals in quick succession and couldn't climb out of the early hole in the team's 7-4 loss on the final day of the William Smith Classic on Sunday afternoon.
After holding one of the nation's top ten teams scoreless for over 20 minutes, the Flying Dutchmen (3-4) saw the Herons (7-0) net three goals in little more than ten minutes, including one off a penalty corner to end the first half.
LVC showed some life when
Molly Van Leuvan scored her second goal in as many days off an assist from
Lyndee Sheaffer just after the break.
William Smith had an answer, however, and padded the lead with back-to-back scores over the next four minutes.
Kristen Garman hooked up with
Maddie Fox on a penalty corner and Fox put her attempt past Heron goalkeeper Biz Chirco in the 45th minute but the hosts responded immediately when Hannah Wood scored her second goal of the game little more than a minute later.
Tricia Martin and
Isabella Vulopas put home their first scores of the season in the 59th and 67th minutes, respectively, but their goals bookended a Lindsey Brandt goal win ten minutes to play.
Notable PerformancesTricia Martin and
Isabella Vulopas – Give credit to this pair for continuing to push late in the game despite the deficit. Both ladies found the back of the net for the first time this season with just under 11 minutes remaining. Martin and Vulopas took one shot each and made the most of it.
