How It HappenedLebanon Valley held off Muhlenberg 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action. With the victory, the Dutchmen now hold a 5-0-0 record and are off to their best start in program history, which dates back to the 1996 season.
The two squads saw several scoring chances in the early stages of the match, but neither team could find the back of the net thanks to solid defensive backs and goaltenders. Eventually,
Sammy Bost broke a 0-0 tie in the 34th minute when she drilled a ball in the box to the left side of the net that beat Jen Mermelstein and put the Dutchmen ahead 1-0 heading into the break.
LVC added another goal in the 80th minute when
Katie Barron scored off a
Meghan Ross assist for the first goal of her collegiate career that put the Dutchmen ahead comfortably at 2-0 with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Mules refused to go away quietly, however, as Abby Lazofsky beat
Taylor Reinhold in the 84th minute to cut LVC's lead to 2-1, but for the final five minutes of the game, a tenacious Dutchmen defense was able to keep the ball in Muhlenberg's zone and eventually run out the clock.
Inside the Numbers - Bost led the offense with five shots, four of which were on goal, while
Rachel Cummings notched four shots and two on net.
-
Taylor Reinhold got her second win of the season and made two stops on the day.
- Emily Jordan paced the Mules with three shots, while Makenzie O'Brien had two.
Notable Performances - LVC's solid backline continued its dominant season and besides allowing a late-game goal, any player put on defense has played tremendously well for the Dutchmen. LVC has two shutouts in five games and has given up just four goals all season.
- With Bost's fourth goal of the season, the junior now has four goals in five games and nine points.
