Lebanon Valley 3, Alvernia 0
(25-17, 25-11, 25-20)
How It HappenedLebanon Valley easily took the first two sets from Alvernia before fighting back from an early deficit in the third to sweep the Crusaders and earn the team's first MAC Commonwealth victory of the season at Sorrentino Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The Flying Dutchmen (5-4, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) grabbed an early advantage in the opening game but the Crusaders (4-5, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) were able to hang around until
Greta Weidemoyer's kill and service aces on back-to-back LVC possessions ended it.
The visitors stayed even with Lebanon Valley early in set two but again the Dutchmen pulled away as the game wore on. LVC tallied seven of the set's final eight points, including two kills from
Jess Attieh, to cement their 2-0 advantage heading into the final game.
Alvernia showed resolve in the deciding set and held an advantage midway through outing before the Dutchmen went on a run, taking advantage of Crusader errors and getting a decisive kill from
Alli Quirk in the final moments.
Notable PerformanceAmber Deshong – The freshman hitter continues to look good early in her collegiate career. She, along with
Jess Attieh and
Greta Weidemoyer, was one of the Dutchmen's top offensive players in the sweep of Alvernia Tuesday night.
A Little Bit of EverythingAs should be expected by now, a number of LVC players showed off their versatility in being able to handle a number of different responsibilities against the Crusaders. In addition to her kill total,
Greta Weidemoyer showed off her serving prowess with a handful of aces, as did libero
Allie Garrett. Garrett was also strong defensively, leading the team in digs. Setter
Rachel Moltz tallied a team-high assist total and worked hard defensively, adding numerous digs in key spots.
Alli Quirk was strong at the net both offensively and on defense as she recorded three solo blocks while
Emily Sides added a handful of assists to go along with her service ace.
Who's Next? The Dutchmen head off to Neumann this weekend for the Knights' Invitational where they open play on Friday afternoon against a perennially strong Salisbury squad before taking on Swarthmore that night. LVC takes on the hosts on Saturday at 10 a.m.
