Game 1Lebanon Valley ended its recent nine-game skid with a convincing 9-3 victory over Arcadia in game one of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
The Flying Dutchmen (9-17, 4-11 CC) broke a recent trend of falling behind early, took advantage of an Arcadia (15-10, 11-6) error, and scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first.
Brett Fundell's RBI groundout drove in
Zac Edwards and
Colin Albright singled to third base, scoring
Phill Dohner in the process.
LVC padded its lead with another tally in the top of the second when
Matthew Smarkanic plated on a
Michael Puglisi fielder's choice.
Nick Cardace's double in the bottom of the third and a Dutchmen error on the play allowed a pair to plate and cut the Arcadia deficit to 3-2.
The visitors responded by blowing the game open with five runs on four hits and a Knight error in the top of the next frame. Puglisi's single through the left side plated Smarkanic, Dohner's single down the left field line drove in
Ross Drawbaugh and Puglisi, Fundell's second RBI groundout brought Edwards across, and Albright's single up the middle scored Dohner.
The Dutchmen plated their final run of the game in the sixth when Albright doubled down the left field line, pushing Fundell across on the play.
The Knights added a final tally in the bottom of the stanza but LVC starter
Michael Houseal, reliever
Brandon Popp, and the defense behind them was stingy to the end.
Game 2Lebanon Valley missed a golden opportunity to complete a sweep of Arcadia but a final-inning rally by the Knights erased the Flying Dutchmen's two-run advantage and gave the home team an 8-7 win in game two of Saturday's Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.
Leading 7-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh, LVC committed two errors and watched its advantage evaporate as Arcadia scored three runs on just two hits, including the game-winner on a wild pitch, to escape with a hard-fought split.
The Dutchmen struck first for the second-straight game when
Devin Dellinger's single to right-center field drove in
Colin Albright in the top of the second. The Knights answered back in the bottom half, tying the score on a double down the left field line.
Arcadia pulled ahead in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs without recording a hit. Instead, the Knights took advantage of three walks and a Lebanon Valley error.
LVC got one back in the fourth when
Matthew Smarkanic's double down the left field line scored
Devin Dellinger before the visitors tied it up on Dellinger's RBI single that plated Edwards in the fifth.
Arcadia drew even thanks to Andonis Yiantsos' lead-off triple and Nick Todero's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth.
Then the Dutchmen blew the game open in the sixth.
Jonathan Harned's double down the left field line drove in
Ross Drawbaugh and
Brett Fundell tripled and scored on the ensuing throwing error, along with
Phill Dohner and

The Knights pushed one across in the bottom half but Lebanon Valley's two run advantage held entering the final frame.
