Game 1Lebanon Valley scored eight runs in the first two innings and stopped Widener's nine-game win-streak with an 8-6 victory over the Pride in game one of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at McGill Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Pride (18-12, 11-6 CC) led off the game with a double down the left field line, and two singles and a sacrifice fly later they had an early 2-0 advantage.
The Flying Dutchmen (10-18, 5-12 CC) responded with six runs on six hits and a Widener error in the bottom of the first.
Phill Dohner singled up the middle,
Zac Edwards singled through the left side, and
Zach Smith bunted them into scoring position.
Brett Fundell's sac fly to right field scored Dohner,
Devin Dellinger walked and
Michael Puglisi and
Matthew Smarkanic singled in back-to-back at-bats, driving in Edwards and Dellinger in the process. A throwing error by the Widener shortstop led to Puglisi's crossing the dish and
Jonathan Harned's single to right field pushed Smarkanic and
Colin Albright across to make it 6-2 LVC after one.
Widener cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs, including one unearned, on three hits and a Dutchmen error in the top of the second.
The home team answered back when Smith led off the bottom of the frame with a triple down the right field line and Fundell drove him in when he cranked a double over the left fielder's head. Albright's single to right-center field plated Fundell four batters later to push the advantage to 8-4.
The visitors added one run in the top of the fourth and another in the top of the fifth but
Jared McCabe came on in relief in the top of the fifth and shut down the Pride in the sixth and seventh, allowing two harmless, two-out hits and sealing the victory for LVC.
Game 2For as strong as Lebanon Valley looked in the opener, the Flying Dutchmen struggled that much in their 8-1 loss to Widener in game two of a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
LVC committed five errors, including two in the third inning and three in the sixth, in the finale and three of the Pride's eight runs were of the unearned variety. Widener scored at least one run in every inning but the seventh.
The Dutchmen scored their lone run when
Zac Edwards singled to center field and drove in
Jonathan Harned from second base with two outs in the bottom of the third.
The Pride got a strong, complete game outing from pitcher Matthew Guarino and scored one run in each of the first five innings before putting up the game's only crooked number, a three-spot, in the top of the sixth.
