How It HappenedLebanon Valley picked up its first win of 2015, a 10-3 victory over Roanoke, in Clermont, Fla. on Thursday morning. The Flying Dutchmen came oh-so-close to earning their second but fell St. Mary's (Minn.) 2-1 in eight innings later in the afternoon.
Cheyanne Brown scored three times from the lead-off position while
Elaine Gross and
Liz Bauer plated twice against the Maroons in game number one. The Dutchmen took advantage of a Roanoke error and had a big second inning, scoring four runs and never looking back. LVC scored twice in the fourth and sixth stanzas, with a one-run inning sandwiched in between.
Nina Mentzer and
Haley Christensen combined to allow just three runs inside the circle.
The finale saw the Dutchmen fall in heartbreaking fashion as Lebanon Valley battled back from a 1-0 deficit to tie the score thanks to
Tessa Deardorff's RBI single that drove in
Kelli Valle in the fifth inning. LVC couldn't take advantage of
Sammy Bost's lead-off single in the sixth and the game went to extra innings.
With international tiebreak rules in effect, St. Mary's (Minn.) #9 hitter was placed on second base and a single plated her in the top of the eighth.
Jorey Aumiller moved Deardorff to third from second base with a sacrifice bunt in the bottom half but a groundout and a pop fly ended LVC's comeback hopes.
Next UpLVC finishes off its 2015 spring break schedule with a pair of morning outings against Saint Benedict at 9 a.m. and Trine, the nation's #6 team, at 11 a.m.
