How It HappenedPhill Dohner's two-out, seventh inning, walk off single drove in
Glenn Dietrich and gave Lebanon Valley a wild 13-12 victory over Maritime (N.Y.) in the team's 2015 season opener in Fort Pierce, Fla. on Friday night.
The Privateers (1-2) led off the game with back-to-back doubles and scored four runs in the top of the first inning. LVC (1-0) responded with a trio of runs in the bottom of the stanza when
Brett Fundell singled down the left field line, scoring Dohner and
Zac Edwards, and
Mike Puglisi singled to right center to bring home
Zach Smith.
Maritime answered back with three runs in the second and an unearned score in the fourth. Trailing 7-3, the Flying Dutchmen scored the game's next nine runs. Edwards plated on a wild pitch, a Fundell walk brought home Dohner, Puglisi's sacrifice fly drove in Z. Smith, and
Paul Smith scored when
Colin Albright singled up the middle, all in the bottom of the fourth.
In the fifth, Smith crossed the plate thanks to another Fundell walk,
Devin Dellinger scored when Puglisi singled down the right field line, and
Jonathan Harned's single to center drove in
Matthew Smarkanic. Dellinger picked up an RBI when his groundout brought Dohner across in the sixth.
The Privateers came all the way back and tied the score at 12-12 in the seventh as four singles plated four runs in the top half. With one out in the bottom of the frame, Albright walked and moved into scoring position when Dietrich was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch but a pinch-running
Korey Johnson was thrown out at home plate following an Edwards' fielder's choice that moved Dietrich to third. Down to their last out, Dohner came through in crunch time, sealing the rain-shortened victory for the Dutchmen.
