How It Happened
Greg Downs' two-out, two RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Massachusetts Maritime it wouldn't relinquish as the Buccaneers defeated Lebanon Valley 5-2 in Vero Beach, Fla. on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers (2-1) took advantage of an LVC miscue and struck first with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Flying Dutchmen (1-1) drew even when a Mass. Maritime error on a Phill Dohner fly ball allowed LVC to plate two in the top of the fifth.

The Bucs used an RBI groundout to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth and Downs' double two stanzas later proved too much for the Dutchmen to overcome. Matthew Smarkanic led off the top of the ninth with a single but a rally never materialized.

On the Mound
- Casey Wall (0-1) got the start for Lebanon Valley and went five innings. He allowed five hits and just one earned run to go along with his three strikeouts.
- Freshman Jared McCabe saw the first action of his collegiate career in relief of Wall, throwing two innings and allowing two runs on two hits.
- Patrick Reagan took the rubber in the eighth inning and sat the Buccaneers down 1-2-3 with two strikeouts and an inning ending double play.
- Mass. Maritime's Kevin Kwedor (1-0) and Zac Cooney (S,2) combined to allow no earned runs and seven hits.

At the Plate
- Zac Edwards and Matthew Smarkanic were each 2-for-4 from the dish.
- In addition to Edwards and Smarkanic's pair of base knocks, Zach Smith, Brett Fundell, and Greg Orlando singled once each.
- Mass. Maritime accounted for both of the game's extra-base hits. Bobby Rosano and Greg Downs each laced doubles.
- Downs was 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Buccaneers.

Around the Diamond
- Matthew Smarkanic recorded the first hit of his collegiate career on Saturday.
- Zach Edwards and Greg Orlando scored Lebanon Valley's two runs.
- Four of the game's seven runs scored were unearned, two for each team.
- Game time was pushed back to 3:30 p.m. from its original 1 p.m. slot because of heavy rain in the Fort Pierce, Fla. area. Historic Dodgertown, the Dodgers' spring training home for many years, played host for today's contest.

Next Up
The Dutchmen are off tomorrow before taking the diamond against #24 Misericordia on Monday morning.
