How It HappenedLebanon Valley ran away from Shenandoah in the second quarter and never looked back to defeat the Hornets 70-51 in the opening game of the 2015 Rinso Marquette Tournament. The Dutchmen improved to 2-1 overall and advanced to tomorrow's championship game against No. 14 FDU-Florham at 3 p.m., while Shenandoah fell to 1-2 and will play Medgar Evers in the consolation game which precedes the championship contest.
The game was close early on, tied at 6-6, before
Taylor Umbrell knocked down a trey to make it 9-6 Dutchmen. For the rest of the quarter, the score remained close and LVC was up 14-13 after one quarter of action.
In the second quarter, the Dutchmen started to pour it on, beginning when
Lexie Lantz took over. She connected on a layup and followed with two free throws and another two-pointer to make it 20-13 LVC. Later in the quarter,
Bridget Rothert added a 3-pointer as the Dutchmen outscored the Hornets 20-7 in the quarter to take a 34-20 advantage heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, LVC extended the lead and was up by as many as 20 points. In the final quarter, Shenendoah tried to come back and cut the deficit to eight at 57-49 with 4:43 to go, but the Dutchmen were clutch from the charity stripe down the stretch and won by 19 points at 70-51.
Inside the Numbers - Rothert led all scorers with 16, shooting 6-for-9 from the free throw line and 3-for-5 from behind the arc.
- Umbrell recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds (all defensive), while Lantz finished with 10 points.
Kiely Chaklos added 11 points and dished out six assists.
- Erin French paced the Hornets with 13 points and 12 boards, while Shannon Kuhn tallied 12 points.
- LVC shot 44.4 percent as a team, compared to Shenandoah's 41.7 percent.
- The Dutchmen outrebounded the Hornets 42-25.
Chaklos in the Record BooksNeeding 10 points for 1,000 for her career, Chaklos scored 11 and became just the 12th player in LVC women's basketball history to score 1,000 points or more for a career. Currently, she sits in 11th place all time. Stephanie Tighe is the program leader with 1,663 points.
