How It HappenedLebanon Valley took two sets in impressive fashion before rallying to complete a comeback in the final set of the team's 3-0 sweep of Montclair State on the first night of the Dutchmen Quad.
The Flying Dutchmen (15-9) controlled things for the majority of the first two games before having to come from behind late in set three to earn the victory by set scores of 25-15, 25-18, and 28-26.
Amber Deshong recorded the first point of the night on a kill of a
Rachel Moltz assist but LVC didn't gain much breathing room until midway through set one. With the score tied 10-10, the Dutchmen went on a key 5-1 run that included two more kills from Deshong and one from
Nina Mentzer. The Red Hawks (14-8) cut the deficit to 20-15 late in the set but that's as close as they'd get as LVC rallied off the final five points, capped by an
Abbey Barnhart service ace.
It was all Lebanon Valley in the early going of the second set with
Emily Sides' ace making it 6-1 right off the bat. Montclair State drew within one midway through the game but the Dutchmen were able to slow the Hawks' push and extend the advantage to 19-15 when
Alli Quirk pounded home a kill off another Moltz assist. LVC recorded five of the last six points, finished off when
Greta Weidemoyer found Moltz for a kill.
The Dutchmen jumped out to another sizable advantage at 10-4 to begin set three when Moltz added another kill, this time off a Sides' offering. But the Hawks scored six straight points to tie things up at 11-11 midway through the game and traded slim advantages with LVC the rest of the way. Montclair used two kills and a Dutchmen attack error to grab a 24-22 lead in crunch time but a Deshong kill and
Allie Garrett's ace forced extra play. Another Deshong kill gave Lebanon Valley a 27-26 lead a few moments later and a Madison Maute attack error clinched the sweep for the Dutchmen.
