CHESTER, Pa. - Simply put, Lebanon Valley keeps on finding ways to win.
For the third straight game, the Flying Dutchmen secured a final-minute victory, picking up an important Commonwealth Conference win at Widener 66-65 to remain in a tie for first place.
The upstart Dutchmen (10-4, 4-1 CC) benefited from
Andy Orr's 21 points and a big second half from
Kevin Agnew as they broke open a tie game thanks to Orr's bucket with 46 seconds remaining and two late
Will Boccanfuso free throws.
Outrebounded 41-23 and with Widener locking down LVC's guard play all night, the visitors turned to Orr, who shot 9-of-13 with 3-of-5 three-point shooting for his 21, and Burke, who dropped in 10 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Agnew did the bulk of his scoring at the line, shooting 10-of-12 on his way to 17 points.
Sardayah Sambo scored 18 with 10 rebounds and Greg Lawson had 16 points with nine boards to lead the Pride (9-5, 2-3 CC), who went to the line 27 times but sank only 18 tries. The Pride shot 44 percent overall to LVC's 38.9 percent clip.
Neither team led by more than five points in the second half after an equally tight first had Widener ahead by a point, 29-28, at halftime. The Pride stayed ahead until midway in the second, when an 8-2 LVC run - which included six straight Agnew points - erased the Pride's lead and put LVC ahead 55-54 at the 4:43 mark. The lead switched hands four times over the next three minutes before Lawson tied it with two free throws with 1:08 to go.
Orr gave LVC the lead for good with his jumper at 0:46, and after an offensive foul on Lawson gave LVC the ball back, Boccanfuso corralled a key offensive board and went to the line to sink what would prove to be the decisive free throws and lead 66-62 with six seconds left. Carlos Taylor hit a three-pointer at the other end with 1.6 ticks remaining, but LVC managed to inbound it at the buzzer and win.
LVC returns to Sorrentino Gymnasium Jan. 14 to face Lycoming at 8 p.m.
