ANNVILLE, Pa. -
Taylor Umbrell drained two clutch three-pointers in crunch time,
Lexie Lantz recorded her first double-double of the season, and
Bridget Rothert filled up the stat sheet in Lebanon Valley's 71-62 victory over Commonwealth Conference foe Arcadia at Sorrentino Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Lantz finished with team-highs of 14 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks while Rothert added 12 tallies, seven boards, seven assists, and four steals. Umbrell netted ten and pulled in six rebounds while
Peyton Carper continued her strong sixth man play with 12 points and six boards.
Clinging to a 61-60 lead with just over three minutes left to play, Rothert swiped the ball from Arcadia's Valerie DiMuro and found a wide open Umbrell for a three-ball that put the Flying Dutchmen (10-2, 2-2 CC) ahead for good. Umbrell's second key connection from distance, coming with 1:59 remaining, sealed the team's second conference win of the year.
Trailing 60-59 with 6:01 left to play, the Dutchmen used a 10-0 run over the next four minutes, capped by a pair of Rothert free throws, to build a cushion they wouldn't surrender.
LVC struggled in the early going as the visitors grabbed a 16-7 advantage with 11:37 left in the first half. The Dutchmen took advantage of foul trouble that sent DiMura to the bench and rallied to close the period on a 32-11 run.
The first ten minutes of the stanza saw Lebanon Valley shoot 3-15 from the floor compared to a 12-18 output in the period's final ten minutes. Carper capped the half with back-to-back three-balls during a 30 second span.
Trailing by as many as 16 in the second half, the Knights clawed their way back into it and retook the lead thanks to a 26-9 run over a 9:48 span capped by a pair of Megan Fox free throws with 6:01 remaining.
Lantz knocked down a pair from the line to put LVC back in front with 5:03 left to play. Umbrell did the rest.
As a team, the Dutchmen were a stout 16-18 from the charity stripe with Rothert and Carper converting each of their 11 combined attempts. Despite being outrebounded 45-41, the Blue and White used another strong outing from its reserve players (21 bench points), a solid shooting night from beyond the arc (38.9 percent), and 20 points off turnovers to earn the win.
Freshman
Alex Lehman turned in one of the best performances of her young career with six points on 3-4 shooting and three assists.
Alyssa Cirucci kept LVC in it early, scoring five of the team's first seven points. She finished with eight while
Lauren Derby and
Rachel Kelly added six and three, respectively.
The victory moves Lebanon Valley out of the basement of the Commonwealth standings and gets the Dutchmen to double-digit victories just one game into 2015. LVC is next in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Widener for another league outing.
