ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lebanon Valley used a late 11-0 run to rally back and beat Alvernia, 56-49, in a key Commonwealth Conference game on Saturday.
The Dutchmen (11-4, 3-4 CC) held the Crusaders (6-9, 2-5 CC) without a field goal for the final 7:30 of the game in a defensive struggle.
Bridget Rothert had a team-high 14 points, including two critical late buckets that sealed LVC's win.
Peyton Carper had 13 points and five boards, and
Taylor Umbrell (6 points, 12 rebounds),
Lexie Lantz (8 points, 5 rebounds) and
Kaitlyn Van Tash (8 points, 7 rebounds) were key contributors in a team effort by LVC.
Both teams struggled to find their shot, with Alvernia shooting only 28.6 percent and LVC 26.2 percent. The Dutchmen had a big day at the line, though, going 18-for-24, and held a huge 55-38 rebounding margin that included six players (Rothert, Carper,
Rachel Kelly, Umbrell, Lantz, and Van Tash) with five or more boards. Chelsea Ebersole led Alvernia off the bench with 11 points.Â
The game was tied as late as the the 4:19 mark of the second half, but the late run by the Dutchmen proved insurmountable as they took a nine-point lead into the final minute. Rothert's key baskets came with 2:15 to go; the junior splashed a 15-footer from the wing before generating a steal-and-layup seconds later to turn a three-point margin into eight and all but end it.
Lebanon Valley will head to Stevenson on Wednesday night.
