Dutchmen Fall To Alvernia In Heartbreaker

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Charles Cooper's steal and layup with 10 seconds left gave Alvernia a 71-69 win over Lebanon Valley in a back-and-forth thriller on Saturday.

The Dutchmen (10-6, 4-3 CC) received a career-high 24 points from Andy Orr, including a big late three-pointer to put them ahead, but the Crusaders (9-6, 4-3 CC) ended the game on a 5-1 run in the final minute to win.

Orr shot 8-of-11 (3-of-4 from three-point range) and added four assists, while Kevin Agnew scored 17 points. Zach Mrozek had a big game, with 11 points, 8 rebounds, and six assists. Both teams were virtually dead even in every category, including shooting (51.9% to 49% for Alvernia), rebounds (30-28 for LVC), and three-pointers (8 to 7 for LVC).

In a game that featured five ties and seven lead changes, it came down to a defensive play in the final seconds. After inbounding the ball from a timeout with 12 seconds left, Cooper poked the ball out from Agnew's hands, and Lamont Clark scooped it up and fed Cooper for a baseline layup and the 70-69 lead. The Dutchmen had a look at the other end but Agnew's three-point attempt was too strong and LVC never got another good look.

Alvernia had led by as much as six with 5:07 to go after a 12-0 run erased LVC's seven-point lead. An Agnew layup and Zach Mrozek's three-pointer with 2:51 left cut the lead to one, and LVC went ahead when Orr drained a wide-open look from the top of the arc with 1:29 to go.

Clark answered that with a jumper to tie it at 68-68, but Agnew made one of two free throws with 22 seconds left to lead by a point. Mrozek then drew a charge off of Alex Shippen, but LVC couldn't convert it into points as Cooper's steal and basket won it.

LVC will head to Stevenson Wednesday night.
