Slow Start, Turnovers Doom Dutchmen In Loss to Lycoming

ANNVILLE, Pa. – A painfully slow start and 20 turnovers doomed Lebanon Valley in the Flying Dutchmen's 64-57 loss to Lycoming at Sorrentino Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

The Warriors started the game on a 17-1 run and netted 25 points off Dutchmen giveaways. LVC failed to convert a field goal until the 11:40 mark and struggled offensively for much of the first half.

Peyton Carper led the way for the Dutchmen (10-4, 2-4 Commonwealth Conference) with team-highs of 13 points and seven rebounds. Taylor Umbrell was the only other LVC player to reach the double-digit scoring mark with 11. Lycoming's Ali Derr was the game's high-scorer with 15.

Despite its early shooting woes, LVC clawed back and outscored Lycoming 28-14 in the first half's final 11 minutes. Carper and Alyssa Cirucci kept the Dutchmen in it early with nine points each in the opening period and Umbrell's three-pointer with 11 seconds left in the half capped an 8-0 Lebanon Valley run, cutting the Warriors advantage to 31-29 at the break.

After Lexie Lantz's jumper early in the second half tied the score at 31-31, the visitors used a crucial 9-0 run over the next 4:58 to regain the lead and the momentum. After falling behind by double digits late in regulation, the Dutchmen cut the deficit to eight when Cirucci connected from the foul line with 5:05 left. Lycoming had an answer for each LVC bucket, however, and when the Blue and White fouled down the stretch, the Warriors converted six free throws in crunch time to put it away.

Lebanon Valley began the game 0-10 from the field and finished with a 32.7 shooting percentage compared to 41.1 percent shooting by the Warriors. The Dutchmen won the rebounding battle 44-35 but couldn't overcome the turnover margin (-8).

Cirucci finished with nine tallies and Bridget Rothert added eight. Alex Lehman netted five points in her first career start, all coming from the charity stripe, while Rachel Kelly added five of her own in a reserve role. Umbrell, Lehman, Lauren Derby, and Kaitlyn Van Tash pulled-in five boards apiece.

Currently riding their first two-game skid of the season, the Dutchmen will try to bounce back when they host another Commonwealth opponent in Alvernia on Saturday afternoon.
