Misericordia Stuns #16 Lebanon Valley In Strokes

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Misericordia upset #16 Lebanon Valley in penalty strokes, dealing the Dutchmen their first loss of the season in a drama-packed game at Arnold Field.

The Dutchmen (9-1) rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the second half, but after two scoreless overtime periods, the Cougars (5-5) converted their third and fourth chances, with Brittany Fleisher converting LVC's lone try.

Misericordia put LVC on its toes with two goals inside of seven minutes, first when Colby Eldridge fed a cross behind Kendra Moll to the stick of Hannah Harvey, and then when Suzhaunna Lerch took Lindsay Hischak's cross at 6:31.

Lebanon Valley got a goal back when Maddie Fox slammed home a rebound of Emily Hegner's save at 11:45, but had to wait until the second half to find the equalizer despite outshooting the visitors 11-2 in the first half. Molly Van Leuvan put the game on level terms with her third goal of the year, working a breakaway with Fleisher and volleying the finish past Angela Pasquini at 44:55. Quality scoring chances for both teams didn't end up in a goal before the end of regulation.

In the first overtime, Misericordia missed an early breakaway chance wide, and Fox forced a diving Paquini save before Misericordia repelled a string of four straight LVC corners. In the second period, Misericordia was the aggressor, but four MU corners resulted in only one shot that Moll stopped.

Each side missed its first two penalty stroke attempts before Hischak found the cage on attempt three, but Fleisher knotted it 1-1 on the next go-round. Fry put one in on the next attempt, and Kristen Garman's bid to beat Paquini on the angle was just wide of the post to give Misericordia the 2-1 edge.

LVC outshot MU 27-10 overall, including 9-2 in overtime. The Dutchmen also led on corners 16-12 (5-4 in OT). Moll made five saves; Pasquini had 11 stops with Hegner also making a defensive save. The game was LVC's first overtime contest ever at Arnold Field, and it was Lebanon Valley's first penalty stroke finish since 2004, when it beat Juniata in the Commonwealth Conference semifinals in double strokes.

LVC is back in action Saturday, hosting Albright at 1 p.m.
