ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Lebanon Valley's strong start to the 2014 season continued with a pair of wins at Elizabethtown's Blue Jay Classic on Friday night. The Flying Dutchmen used a come-from-behind effort to knock off the hosts 3-0 in their opening match before picking up their second sweep of the evening over Swarthmore in the finale. LVC topped the Blue Jays 27-25, 25-20, and 25-23 and handled the Garnet 25-20, 25-17, and 25-18.
Sophomore
Greta Weidemoyer turned in the strongest offensive performance of her young career in the nightcap, racking up a career three-set high of18 kills, the fifth highest total of any Dutchman in a three-set match. The second-year player recorded an impressive .548 attacking percentage against the Garnet and Swarthmore had no answer. She also played a big part in Lebanon Valley's comeback victory over the hosts as her 12 kills were a team-best total.
Trailing in every one of the match's three sets against the Blue Jays, LVC refused to go away and used late runs to climb back into each game. The Dutchmen overcame a huge outing by Elizabethtown's Kelci Scannapieco. The hitter tallied 17 kills but the combination of Weidemoyer and senior captain
Kayla Confer's 11 kills were enough to combat the home team. Sophomore
Taylor Troutman notched seven kills and junior
Alli Quirk chipped in with five of her own.
Lebanon Valley libero
Allie Garrett led the way defensively and dug out a match-high 15 balls while senior captain
Kacey Musselman also racked up double-digit digs with 11. Confer and Musselman were tough at the net and had two assisted blocks apiece while Musselman, the team's top setter, recorded 31 assists.
The Dutchmen's second outing didn't require a comeback but it ended with the same result. In addition to Weidemoyer's big night, Confer added nine kills while Quirk and junior
Emily Sides pitched in with seven and five, respectively. Lebanon Valley's offense was consistent throughout the match as the Blue and White finished with a team attacking percentage of over .300 in each of the three sets.
Defensively, Garrett was top-notch again and recorded a match-high 22 digs. Musselman and sophomores
Kayla Miller and
Rachel Moltz dug out six balls each while Confer assisted on two blocks on the front line. Musselman's 37 assists against Swarthmore were a match-best.
The pair of victories improved the Dutchmen to 10-2 on the season and sent a message to the rest of squads participating in this year's Blue Jay Classic. Lebanon Valley will be back at it again tomorrow morning when they wrap up their time at Elizabethown with two more matches, taking on Johns Hopkins at 11 a.m. before closing out their weekend with a match against York (Pa.) at 1 p.m.
