Stevenson Bests Volleyball In Four

ANNVILLE, Pa. - Stevenson took advantage of big blocking and Lebanon Valley errors as it won, 3-1 (25-22, 25-14, 20-25, 25-13), in the Commonwealth Conference opener Wednesday at Sorrentino Gymnasium.

Circled on the calendar as a big early-season match-up between the league's top two teams in the preseason coaches' poll, fans certainly weren't disappointed as the Dutchmen (7-2, 0-1 CC) battled back from two sets down to stay alive.

The Mustangs (7-1, 1-0 CC) stuffed 12 blocks and benefited from long serving runs in the first and second sets to pull away with the lead. The Dutchmen hit just .047 despite another good night for reigning CC Player of the Week Greta Weidemoyer, who had a match-high 13 kills while hitting .206. LVC ended up with 13 service errors.

Taylor Troutman had eight kills and Emily Sides added seven for LVC, with Allie Garrett leading the defense with 25 digs. Kacey Musselman had 33 assists and 12 digs. Kristen Brooks led Stevenson with 10 kills, and libero Samantha Perillo ended with a match-high 30 digs.

Stevenson ran out to a 22-14 lead in the first set, but Musselman took serve and ran it to 22-20 before the Mustangs called timeout, regrouped, and ended up with a 25-22 set win. In the second set, Annika Schwartz hit a huge serving run to break open the game from 4-4 to 15-4 on the way to a 25-14 win.

The Dutchmen turned it around in the third, however, battling all set long before a decisive serving sequence by Weidemoyer opened a gap at 21-16. Two kills by Troutman and an SU attack error gave LVC set point, and Weidemoyer's kill ended it 25-20. The fourth set, unfortunately, was all Mustangs as they pulled out to a 10-4 lead and served out the final five points of the match to win 25-13.

LVC has the weekend off before returning to work Tuesday at Alvernia.
