ANNVILLE, Pa. - #13 Lebanon Valley ran its program-best start to 17-0, taking two from Stevenson University in a rematch of the 2013 Commonwealth Conference final.
The Dutchmen (17-0, 8-0 CC) won the opener handily 6-0, but needed a sixth-inning sacrifice fly by
Jorey Aumiller to break a tie and win 2-1 in game two. LVC is the final unbeaten team left in NCAA softball, in any division, after the previously perfect University of Chicago lost on Saturday.
Sam Derr (9-0) threw her third conference shutout of the week in the opener, then won in relief of
Haley Neff in the nightcap.
Allie Hartman had runs batted in in both games, while
Emily Johnson and
Jordyn Miller each tagged two-run doubles in game one.
Junior
Tessa Deardorff saw her consecutive steals streak end at an impressive 52 in a row, writing the fifth-longest streak in NCAA Division III history into the recordbooks. Lebanon Valley went error-free in the doubleheader, extending their perfect fielding run to 52 innings.
Game One
LVC's bats were hot from the start as the Dutchmen jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. After
Tessa Deardorff singled and Derr and Hartman walked, Johnson ripped a doubled to the wall in the right center, scoring a pair of runs. One batter later, Miller hit her own two-bagger to plate two more.
Angela Harris grounded out to score Mille rin the fourth after the freshman led off the inning with a walk and moved over on a
Katie Deardorff sacrifice and a wild pitch; in the sixth, Hartman doubled in Derr to make it 6-0.
Stevenon's only real threat came in the top of the sixth, putting runners on third and second with two outs, but Derr induced a groundout before striking Jenna Diamino out swinging to end the inning.
Derr scattered seven hits and struck out six with no walks issued to pick up the win. Briana Pichalski (6-4) allowed six earned with four strikeouts and three walks.
Game Two
The nightcap turned into a pitcher's duel between Neff, Derr, and Stevenson starter Molly Hoyt, with both teams combing for just nine hits in the game.
LVC got off to a fast start again, putting
Tessa Deardorff and
Sammy Bost on second and third for Hartman to drive in a run in the bottom of the first. The Dutchmen would hold the 1-0 lead until the fifth when SU's Laura Welch and Kristen Mueller smacked consecutive doubles to tie it 1-1. That brought on Derr, who induced the third out and put the Mustangs down in order in the sixth.
Hartman drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the sixth and
Elaine Gross pinch ran, moving to second on Miller's single through the left side. Johnson pinch hit to sacrifice both over, and after
Katie Deardorff reached on a bunt to load the bases, Aumiller drove a fly ball to center deep enough to score Gross for the lead.
That was all Derr needed as she took care of business in the seventh, striking out Welch to end the game for her ninth win of the season. She threw the final 2.1 innings, taking over for Neff (4.1 IP, 4 K, 1 ER) in the fifth and extending her scoreless streak to 24.1 innings. Molly Hoyt (5-5) threw a tough four-hit game, allowing just one earned run in the loss for Stevenson.
Next Time
LVC will host Gettysburg on Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader.
